Mmmmm food. So as I am writing this post I was eating so I had to do a post on food. And what is better than just “food”? German food. So here it is! Food you and your kids will (hopefully love), because we love them so I am pretty sure you (and your kids) will too! Enjoy!
Flammkuchen (tarte flambe) is an absolutely delicious thin pizza which is covered with crème fraîche with thin-sliced onions and thin strips of bacon. Oh my! The had me at bacon. They are served EVERYWHERE. Christmas markets. restaurants, festivals.
Doners Kebap. They are not originally from Germany obviously. It is a Turkish dish made with rotisserie lamb (primarily), chicken or beef. They are served like a gyro with tomato, onion, lettuce, sauce etc. I love the doner box which is the meat, sauce and pommes frites.
And to add to pommes frites those devilish deliciousness of course is something kids would devour. I mean who doesn’t like French fries anyways? Though here in Germany you don’t eat them with ketchup. You eat them with Mayo! I will FOREVER eat them with mayo. Mayo is also different here. It is a hint sweeter than in the good ol USA. The fries are also seasoned with pommes seasoning. Who know what is really in it? Maybe I should search it. Maybe this is it… the seasoning recipe from Disney? I should try it out!
Sandwiches. All kinds of sandwiches. FYI brötchen equals bun/bread in German. So here are few kinds of sandwiches. Fischbrötchen/Lachsbrötchen Fish in bread. Lachs is salmon which is my 5 year olds favorite! Wurstbröt (sausage). Pizzafleischkäse which is a pizza inside of a meatloaf served in brötchen. It is really good!
Of course we have to have Brezels (Pretzels) on this list! You have not visited Deutschland without having a brezel und bier. In my case wein or in my kids case an apfelschorle (apple juice and carbonated water)
OK I lied.. one more. 🙂
Eis. Ice cream is insanely delicious! And wow do they make art of it as well! My favorite is spaghetti eis! And the awesome thing is that I can get this right outside of my home every single day from April until October! It is also super cheap! You can get a scoop for only .80€ and I can get one of those for about 4€. There are also more gourmet eis as well that are decorated with all kids of fruit and different flavored ice cream. I have heard some of these gourmet ice creams going for about 30€ in Rome! This is certainly something your kids will enjoy!

We love the spaghetti eis! I find German bread too heavy though.

We love spaghetti eis as well Brotchen is yummy. We don’t eat ALL the time. It is really good to make as a sandwich for sure. I know exactly what you mean about heavy. I gained 20lbs coming to Germany. Ha!

Yes it will. That is why I tell all newcomers to not eat so much of it.

The pretzels! And while not suitable for children, it would be great with a beer! I do enjoy their sausages as well and they have been very succesful in exporting their sausages around the world (much like the Turkish with doner kebab) 🙂

I’ve never wanted to go to a country so much until I read this post. Haha. That all looks so good and I am one of those military spouses that doesn’t want to jump at the opportunity to live overseas either.

Well! When there is an opportunity I will ALWAYS jump for it! If someone doesn’t like Germany. I say to just drive a few hours and you can get a total different culture experience! We are in proximity to so many countries France is only 1 hour, Belgium is 2 1/2 hours, Luxembourg is 2 hours, Netherlands (Holland) is 2 1/2 hours. We absolutely love it here! I am so happy that I don’t even want to move back to the USA at the end of our tour. lol Have a great day! 🙂

Even if the kids didn’t love anything else, they would at least try everything if we promised them spaghetti ice cream at the end!! My 8-yr-old is already saying he wants to visit Germany 🙂

He would love it. We have a 9 year old & 5 year old sons and a 4 year old daughter. They love it here. I don’t even think the want to go back to the USA. BUT if you want spaghetti ice… you can make it with a ricer!
Use vanilla gelato (put through the ricer).
Strawberry sauce
whipped cream
white chocolate shavings
Super yum!
Thank you for your comment!
